I'm back in - putting a trouble call to a GM.

Thanks to Despina for IMing me on Facebook.

I didn't even have a battlenet account - that's how long I have been not playing and somehow I got hacked. I wasn't even subscribed and they got in and resubscribed me.

Since I haven't been playing - that means it wasn't a keylogger or some app that I downloaded.

I don't think so. The Internet won't let you put IE. And safe in the same sentence.

Lets put it this way - I haven't logged into WoW in something like six months...maybe longer. I'm thinking the last time I logged in was during the summer.

My WoW password is unique. I don't use it for any other game. So - if it was a keylogger, then they had to have keylogged it last summer, then hold on to it and wait to use it. Definitely possible and impressive. Ran all the security scans and everything seems to come up clean.

I also was not subscribed. When I got back in and changed my password - the credit card to which I was subscribed was not mine. My guess is a visa gift card. Thank you hacker for my one free month of play.

I got all my crap back - but it's all crap. They took my elf boots. A lot of what they took didn't make a lot of sense...except for the bank stuff. Boss will have to let me know if the bank items were returned to the bank. If not, I'll put in another ticket.

As for me - I play EVE since I can play that AFK - I'm taking five graduate course so I'm basically doing that all the time.

In anycase, that stuff is never fun.
The elf boot comment made me laugh though.

It could have been any number of things. Can't know for sure now. It isn't always a keylogger, and could have been something extremely subtle or obvious. I made a mistake ONCE involving a message notification from myspace. I clicked the link to check it, not realizing it was just a clone site/"phishing" setup.
It could have been something like this where they got access to an email address and did a password recovery. It could have been something much simpler. Just running software and scanners is a good start, but won't solve problems. My advice would be to do all your scans and then just change passwords on everything you log into and go from there. It's a good start.

The topic of security came up often when I was playing, and we've joked about it on the forums too a bit. If anyone is facing issues or a bout of sudden paranoia, i'm sure there's a couple people who could help you out. It's mostly common sense stuff but sometimes we don't have the whole picture or do dumb things without realizing or whatever.

I'm 99% sure the CC used was stolen.. They used a stolen one to pay for the transfer of my mage to another server. A few weeks later Blizzard sent me an email sayin my account would be suspended because the CC used was disputed and rejected. I contacted blizzard and told them what happened and they cleared it.

These hackers won't ever pay money out to hack these accounts other then maybe some fee at an internet cafe in China.

Look at it this way.

1. The hacker gets an order for $50 for 20k gold and gets his money.
2. The hacker look at his list of accounts and picks one from the server the person buying the gold is on and logs in.
3. The hacker vendors everything, AH more, cleans out a gbank and then sends the gold over to the person buying the gold.
4. The hacker then uses the account to spam Org and SW with BUY GOLD ONLINE ads.
5. The account gets reported as hacked and Blizzard shuts down the account.
6. The logs are then checked and Blizzard sees who the gold was sent to and blocks their account also.
7. Blizzard restores the hacked account and all items in gbank.
8. Person buying gold looses out on $50 and his account.
9. Hacker gains $50 and looses nothing.
10. Profit....
11. Goto step 1.

That's the process..

The hacker never gets banned... Just the person buying the gold.

Got a Gbank full of stuff in my mail yesterday, and returned over 18% of it to the guild. The rest is fees and emotional compensation.

I think the guild owes you a bit more as far as emotional compensation is concerned.

Hacking update - got this email from blizzard. Apparently the credit card they used after they hacked my account was hacked as well. I responded. Will be interesting to see if they will be able to resolve it.
____________________________________________

Greetings,

Access to the World of Warcraft account xxxx, has been temporarily disabled
due to a dispute filed against the account's past payments. This dispute was
filed by the bank, credit card provider, or financial institution associated
with the payment on the account. As a result of this dispute, funds paid on the
account were withdrawn from Blizzard Entertainment. This is known as a
"chargeback".

The total withdrawn by this chargeback was: $14.99.

The account is now considered by Blizzard to have a negative balance, and will
be unavailable for play until any and ALL outstanding balances have been repaid
to Blizzard. If more than one chargeback email was sent for a single account,
all chargebacks will
need to be repaid before the associated account can be unlocked unless the
chargeback was for an electronic expansion purchase which was removed from the
account.

Repayment can be made by contacting our Billing department at 1-800-592-5499.
Hours: 8:00 AM 8:00 PM Pacific Time 7 days a week

We have also provided the following numbers for our international customers:
- Australia: 1-800-041-378
- Singapore: 1-800-2549-9273
- Mexico: 001-888-578-7628
- Argentina: 0800-333-0778
- Chile: 1230-020-5554

Other International callers without access to our 800 numbers may use:
1-949-955-0283

If you wish to repay the chargeback(s) via a US money order, please visit
http://us.blizzard.com/support/article/chargeback.

Please feel free to contact Billing at billing@blizzard.com if you need
additional information.

Until the amount which was withdrawn from the chargeback is repaid, the World of
Warcraft account will remain indefinitely unplayable. Please do not reply to
this email, as you will receive no further response.

Thank you for your time.
